History
In 1887, in Denver, a woman, a priest, two ministers, and a rabbi came together because they believed there had to be a better way to meet the needs of their community. They came from different backgrounds, different faiths, and different perspectives, yet they shared one conviction: the challenges facing their neighbors were too big for any one person or organization to solve alone.
That moment, one simple act of coming together, sparked a movement that has endured for more than 135 years.
Here in Clinton, that movement took root in 1938, when the Clinton Community Federation held its first successful community drive, raising $40,000 to support nine local organizations. In 1956, the name changed to the United Fund of Clinton, reflecting a growing, coordinated effort to meet local needs. By 1964, the Gateway United Way helped Clinton become the only city in the nation to stage 14 consecutive over‑goal campaigns, a remarkable testament to the generosity and determination of this community. In 1997, Gateway United Way joined with the Central Community United Way to form what we know today as United Way of Clinton County, Iowa.
Today, United Way of Clinton County, Iowa supports health and human‑service programs that address identified community needs and strengthen collaboration. We focus on three key areas that form the foundation of a thriving life: Health, Youth Opportunity, and Financial Security. These are the building blocks of everyday life; they are the difference between stability and struggle, possibility and limitation, thriving and merely surviving.
In Clinton County, we know these needs are real. We see families working hard and still falling short. We see children who need support and people who need connection. We see neighbors who need not a handout, but a hand up.
We believe our community deserves to be healthy and strong. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, the chance to dream, and the support to pursue those dreams. And we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to feel financially stable.
